Franchise Model 2.0

Summary

Franchise Model

Abstract

The ethos of decentralisation and open source code means that a lot of new projects end up trying to reinvent the wheel and ultimately, the majority fail to gain enough momentum, be that because of under-funding when it comes building out tech or marketing resources, or both.

Motivation

Franchise model solves this as it allows teams, especially early stage, to bounce off strong tech base that is run by established firms (in this case Sushi). Being smaller, means being more agile and nimble, while the core tech might be built/run/services by Sushi, it will allow these teams to enter certain markets quicker and explore partnerships and collaborations that core Sushi team might otherwise find less attractive. But over time, with enough time and partnerships, these new projects operating under “built by Sushi brand” will slowly gain market share and penetrate areas that otherwise would have been captured by Sushi competitors.

Specification

We actually run a similar forum proposal back in September (Franchise Model) but a lot has happened since, both in terms of broader market and also Sushi. When we approached Sushi discord server with this, we were met with gatekeepers response - “…Sushiswap is completely open source and can be forked without permission (except Bentobox)…”. Yet another “copy” of Sushi is not what the market needs, we also do not feel that this is particularly conducive to Sushi’s growth as a brand. We ourselves would love an opportunity to enter into a franchise model type agreement and run an offering - “Sushi by team Netherworld”.

We are building a management/tycoon style game called “Land, Labor and Capitol” (LLC), there is land you can buy/sell, you can set up apartments and stores etc and make companies that can sell “stock” on the games own stock exchange. It merges investing and gameplay, everything is also based on fractional ownership, so you can buy fractions of apartment buildings or factories. The idea is to integrate a variety of DeFi protocols/solutions to be part of this in-game experience. Everyone talks about DeFi legos, but what better way to educate and showcase DeFi use cases than in a gamified environment. Tycoon/management style game allows for various use cases such as exchange, launchpad, vaults, borrow/lend, even bonds for in-game assets.

We strongly feel that Sushi’s offering - swap, earn, stack yields, lend, borrow, leverage - works perfectly for such a gamified environment and instead of seeking to reinvent the wheel, we would like to propose a franchise model and run an in-game offering - “Sushi by team Netherworld”.

Franchise model will require projects to dedicate certain % of tokens to Sushi’s treasury. At the same time, certain % to be airdropped pro-rata to a snapshot of Sushi holders. Finally, at any point in time, Sushi governance should be able to decide to dissociate itself from a forking team. Discussion is needed on these points especially.

My current concern with franchising and sub-DAOs is the state of Sushi Treasury needs rebuilding. Happy to entertain projects that want to build leveraging the Sushi brand and its open-source code to jump-start their project. Perhaps you can provide more explicit details for your given scenario?

Happy New Year and thank you for the above!

To recap - We are building a management/tycoon style game called “Land, Labor and Capitol” (LLC), there is land you can buy/sell, can set up apartments and stores etc and make companies that can sell “stock” on the games own stock exchange. This creates new opportunities for both active, as well as passive players and in particular, guilds. Creating competition between guilds will lead to more efficient game play and also more active and creative use of assets that guilds have control over. (i.e vaults)

Tycoon style game merges investing and gameplay, everything will be based on fractional ownership, so players can buy fractions of apartment buildings or factories. (i.e borrow/lend and NFTs). The idea is to integrate a variety of DeFi protocols/solutions to be part of this in-game experience.

Quick note about user acquisition - land/nft sales is not a sustainable way to promote longevity of any project, let alone gaming. Land owners are important but we decided to flip the established model of non-playable characters (NPCs) upside down. In a tycoon game - these characters carry out jobs/task across various in-game economies (background characters) - industrial, retail, trade etc. NPCs issued by LLC will be under the control of real-life players that will be able to join guilds or remain autonomous, maybe even evolve into “unions”, led by a particularly outspoken member of certain sector etc. These NPCs will be exposed to the same in-game DeFi tools that will be available to guilds and land owners.

Now, back to the idea of franchising and sub-DAOs.

Tycoon/management style game allows for various use cases such as exchange, launchpad, vaults, borrow/lend, even bonds for in-game assets. We are big believers in a multi-chain world and this philosophy is similar to that of Sushi, multi-chain first philosophy which attempts to lower the barrier between different chains and provide maximum exposure between them all. Sushi’s product suite is also very suitable for points raised in earlier paragraphs.

We want to bring current and future iterations of Sushi’s solution into our gaming environment, to be at the very core of LLC operations. Franchising or sub-DAO route, will ensure that the work of Sushi’s core team continues to get recognised even if it’s operated under a brand of “Sushi by team LLC”.

We believe that a portion of our protocol should be owned by both the Sushi’s treasury and Sushi holders. We propose to issue a token and allocate 10% of total supply to Sushi Treasury (vesting schedule to be discussed) and also 5% of supply to Sushi token holders (vesting schedule to be discussed). We can explore commitment from our side to keep x% of treasury in Sushi assets, although diversification should not be compromised by this. We can then explore co-marketing collaborations to leverage the Sushi brand.

Happy to discuss this in more detail via DM. I think we have a group already on TG?

Thank you. Yes, thats correct, TG group is already set up with Sushi team.
